Inspired by Andy Warhol, i’m using well known brands as inspiration but i’m stripping them of all their meaning. logos become abstract blurs with no meaning.

Hi, from now on this blog will primarily focussing on my work in New Media Art (film, video etc.) I have created another blog for my other projects.

I have completed my latest media project, it’s called ‘The Journey Continues’, it is a sequel (sort of) to my first short film ‘The Journey’- which takes place on a motorway/highway.

‘The journey’ is symbolic of my life in rural Cumbria, it has no beginning and no end, because i edited the footage so that there was no sense of narrative. the film plays on a loop so there is no end to this journey. The viewer is trapped in a constant loop of traffic which randomly speeds up, slows down and does all sorts of things. The soundtrack is a repetitive jazz instrumental made out of garageband loops. I think The Journey is successful because it captures the feelings of isolation and aimlessness that come from living in remote areas.

My new film was also shot from the window of a moving car but this time there are several differences. The Setting; takes place in my current environment, a city, rather than the middle of nowhere. Editing/narrative; also plays on a loop but narrative flows a lot better, starts and ends in roughly the same place but it’s difficult to see the transition. Style; was shot using a stop motion stills camera (takes several pictures a second) rather than a film camera. Music; this time i composed & recorded my own soundtrack from scratch- using no loops this time- a dubstep/electronic track which uses a heavy synth bassline and ambient effects.

‘The Journey Continues’ contains a lot more visually; people, animals, buildings, trees etc. i feel that it successfully captures the pace and flow of urban life in the same way that my first film captures the isolation & boredom of a semi rural area.

BTW I will post the video on this blog in the next week or so.

Salinger & Catcher In The RyeThese are all excerpts from a larger piece of work, i chose images at random from The Times (a UK newspaper) tore them up and stuck them onto card. Then i wrote the opening paragraph of Catcher on the surface, i think it’s really nice how the images coincide with the  text.

some pictures of my piano sculpture, Feb-March 2010part 1

i come from a small town so when i started working/living in a city i became fascinated with the urban environment and the pace of life in a city. i will compose a soundtrack to this piece using natural/found sounds & influences from electronic music i.e. dubstep.

i’m intending this piece to be projected in a space as an installation but i would also like to produce a DVD of the work so it can be viewed in a person’s home or a laptop/computer.

i like the dubstep genre because it reflects the urban environment in a sort of abstract way. because there are no vocals it allows the listener to be immersed in the music and reflect on things (that sentence probably doesn’t make much sense but i’m quite tired) but the atmospheric feel of dubstep fits in with the type of work that i want to do

ok, so ive started my sculpture work- but i dont have the pics on me right now today I am starting work on my second sculpture which involves a piano. i always try to link my work to music & sound.

i have started sculptural work, it’s interesting but i cant engage on any sort of emotional level with minimalist sculpture. it sort of depresses me cos it’s so plain & undecorated. reminds me of methodism, and thats not a good thing.
